Results from Cotai Arena, Macao, China
Argentinian Cesar Cuenca is finally a world champion after scoring a decisive points win over Ik Yang at the Cotai Arena in Macao, China on Saturday.
The 34 year-old, who distinctively has just two knockouts from a 13-year undefeated career, equalled Floyd Mayweather’s active record of 48-0 in claiming the vacant IBF super lightweight title.
Both fighters hit the canvas in the fight, but it was Cuenca who was on top throughout proceedings to see out a 117-110, 116-109 and 115-110 success on the cards.
In chief support, former pound for pound number two Nonito Donaire continued his path towards a world title shot at 122lbs with a short night’s work against ex-EU champion Anthony Settoul.
Donaire, 32, slipped the jab in the second round before unleashing a massive right hand to put Settoul down and claim a 35th career triumph.
‘The Filipino Flash’ is now one step closer to an eighth world crown after recording back-to-backs following his damaging defeat to Nicholas Walters last year.
Also on the bill, ex-world lightweight title challenger Denis Shafikov scored a 36th victory from 38 bouts in the Russian southpaw’s second contest over 135lbs. The 30 year-old stopped Roy Mukhlis in three rounds to record 20th knockout and keep his career on track.
There were also wins for super bantamweight Rex Tso, who moved to 17-0, Qu Peng over Michael Van Himwegen via six-round decision at light heavyweight and Kuok Kun Ng who halted Phompetch Twins Gym in four to push his C.V to 8-0. Jose Carlos Ramirez improved his record to 15-0 with a fourth round win over Ryusei Yoshida.
