Turbo Time: Terry Flanagan on the brink

Chris Glover 11/07/2015

Ten years on from Ricky Hatton’s magical night in Manchester, Terry Flanagan attempts to create one of his own as he faces tough American puncher Jose Zepeda.

Zepeda comes to Manchester with a reputation as a hard hitter and has stopped 20 of his 23 opponents. He enters this contest full of ambition and has stated that he intends on knocking Flanagan out.

Flanagan’s story is that one of a fairy tail. Not the greatest amateur, came through on the small hall shows and fought whoever has been put in front of him. Now Terry gets his night to make history 10 years on from Hatton and become a World Champion. Flanagan, who holds wins over Martin Gethin and Stephen Ormond, looks to make it a memorable night in Manchester but faces a tough task from the start.

The undercard is once again top draw as Scousers Tom Carus and 2012 Olympic Captain Thomas Stalker have a Merseyside derby on Manchester soil. Stalker looks to be a far more improved fighter now under the guidance of Danny Vaughan in Marbella and will look to make a statement against the tough Carus who pushed Josh Leather all the way a couple of months back. This could be a barnstormer.

Paul Butler returns to action as he looks to build towards another crack at a Super Flyweight World Title. The impressive Jack Catterall looks to continue his excellent development as he defends his WBO Intercontinetal Light Welterweight title.

A fighter I rate as the most underrated in Britain, Liam Walsh fights for the vacant WBO Intercontinental Lightweight title as he awaits a possible crack at either Roman Martinez or Orlando Salido if he chooses to go back down to Super Featherweight. Liam would make an excellent addition to a buzzing British Lightweight scene.

The surprise of the show is world rated heavyweight Alexander Ustinov makes an appearance as he takes on journeyman Travis Walker over 10 rounds.

The bill is made up by prospects Steven Lewis, Joe Costello, Macaulay McGowen, Kallum De’Ath, Adrian Gonzalez as well as former English Super Featherweight Champion Jon Kays.
