Tarver Jr: I held my own with Thurman, I’m the whole package!

Antonio Tarver Jr is not short of confidence as the super welterweight prospect gears up for the third professional fight of his career in Florida on Saturday night.

Son of the former undisputed world champion bearing the same name, the 27 year-old will be aiming to make it three knockouts in a row since entering the paid ranks and says pre-fight workouts with WBA champion Keith Thurman gave him even more optimism for the future.

“I’ve been training with the world champion Keith Thurman and I held my own in there. It’s been a great experience,” said Tarver Jr.

“It’s a beautiful thing to be fighting in my home state. I’m blessed to be fighting at the Sun Dome. My dad is always right in my ear. Always on me about the defense and protecting myself in the ring.

“I’m a southpaw who’s a fast hitter. I can hit hard and counter punch. I think of myself as the whole package,” he added.

The young Tarver fights New Yorker Julian Valerio on the Keith Thurman v Luis Collazo world title undercard at the Sundome, alongside the likes of Lamont Peterson’s sibling Anthony, Tony Harrison and WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell’s brother Antonio this weekend.
