Joe Joyce is the European Games Champion after his impressive 3-0 win over Russia’s Gasan Gimbatov in today’s super-heavyweight final in Baku.
Each of the three judges awarded the bout to the 29-year-old Brit, with two scoring it 29-28 in Joyce’s favour and the third giving a 29-27 victory to the Londoner.
Joyce, who is also the Commonwealth Games Champion, follows in the footsteps of Nicola Adams in winning boxing gold for Team GB and his medal took the team’s total tally to 40, including 16 golds.
Joyce said: “It’s brilliant. I just can’t wait to get my hands on that gold medal. I’m over the moon.
“I went at it but I had to. I’m here to win and I’ll do that by any means possible. This has been such a good experience and a brilliant atmosphere. This is definitely up there with the Commonwealth Games.
“Qatar [World Championships] is the next one for me so I’m going to enjoy my success here then get back to the gym and start training hard and focus in on the Worlds.”
