Kevin Lerena against Deon Coetzee tops the triple-header “Young Guns” tournament at Emperors Palace on July 30.
It will be Lerena’s first crack at a national title against a fighter who can be very threatening, not having lost since 2012. It is an opportunity for Lerena (12-1, 7 KOs) to get back in the reckoning after his defeat to Johnny Muller last year. He will be under pressure to produce a dominant performance worthy of a boxer with his ambitions. Trained by Nick Durandt, Coetzee (11-5, 7 KOs) himself won’t give up his cruiserweight title easily, which suggests a terrific scrap in store.
The main undercard bout also points to an engaging battle with newly-crowned SA junior-welterweight champion Warren Joubert making his first defence against Grant Fourie. Both are similar in style and always offer superb entertainment value. Expect this one to be close.
Dowayne Combrink and Giovanni Bushby, meanwhile, will return to Emperors for a third meeting with the WBA Pan-African middleweight belt on the line. This pair were nip and tuck in their two previous bouts and nothing suggests the third meeting will be any different.
A sub-plot to the action is in the corners where ex-champions Harold Volbrecht and Vuyani Bungu do duty for Combrink and Bushby respectively.
Jeff Ellis, promoting the event in association with Golden Gloves, is still putting together the undercard, suffice to say that it will feature top young talent.
The action will be televised live on SuperSport.
