Andre Ward didn’t look like a fighter who had been away from the ring for some nineteen months as the former pound for pound number two dominated Paul Smith Jnr for the duration of their contest in Oakland.
The 31 year-old was just too skilful for the Briton and use his superior movement and combinations to frustrate Smith, gradually busting him up until his corner pulled him out in the ninth round. ‘S.O.G’ was never seriously in danger in the fight as the American impressed all at the Oracle Arena with his unquestionable talent.
Smith did land a haymaker in the seventh that proved what his pre-fight strategy was, but that only spurred on Ward who did considerable damage to the face of ‘The Real Gone Kid’ leaving him a bloody mess. Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher had seen enough when it seemed as though Ward had possibly broken his opponent’s nose and the experienced coach then threw in the towel.
Ward has fully announced himself back on the world stage once again as he moves to 28-0 with a 15th KO, whilst Smith goes back to England to answer some serious questions about his epic failure to make weight, not once but twice over the weekend.
