Paul Smith let off, weighs 176.4lbs for 172lb Andre Ward bout

Largely known as a super middleweight, British fighter Paul Smith Jnr failed to make light-heavyweight on Friday for what is the biggest bout of his career.

The 32 year-old from Liverpool, England scaled 176.4lbs against the stipulated 172lb mark, some 4.4lbs over the limit for his contest in Oakland.

Opponent and former pound for pound star Andre Ward came in at 171.8lbs as the American comfortably reached his mark ahead of the Oracle Arena match-up.

Where this leaves Smith’s career is anyone’s guess as most believe that the ‘Real Gone Kid’ is on the verge of suffering a third straight loss at world class level.

Ward, 31, did have the opportunity to halt the encounter, but instead opted to continue on with the clash so to not prolong a 19-month ring absence any further.

Once the ex-WBA ‘super’ champion rehydrates, Smith’s weight should not leave him at too much of a disadvantage as the ‘S.O.G’ still begins the fight as a huge favorite to prevail.
