The Great Julio Cesar Chavez came to the World Council’s weekly press conference in Mexico City to announce he’ll be climbing back into the ring on July 3rd, to fight a four rounds exhibition against his old rival and lifelong friend Mario “Azabache” Martinez, to raise money for his Clinics in Culican and Tijuana, which help patients win often protracted month-long battles against alcohol and drug addiction.
On September 13th 1984, those two fought an outright war for the vacant WBC super featherweight crown. Julio prevailed with an eighth round TKO. Even three decades later the sheer intensity of that battle, lingers, almost giving you a nose bleed as you see the flailing blows, on the flickering screen. And Julio pleaded for Mario to go easy up to the hooter/bell as he’s had nose surgery.
Julio himself has been free of these addictions for five years, but explained it’s an ongoing battle which has to be fought and won, each and every day.
Weighing a very trim 147 pounds and with a rock hard tummy… minus midriff, Julio confirms he’s already running daily to be in shape for “Azabache” in Revolution Park, Culican, which is adorned by his rather stern silvery statue.
Each ticket for this extravaganza will cost one hundred pesos. All of the money will go to help patients in the program: “El gancho a la adicion,” at the clinics in Culican and Tijuana, which Julio has created. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, started the glove rolling by pledging for one hundred!
Boxing Great and fellow Television commentator Marco Antonio Barrera, will be taking part, and there will also be a hatful of amateur bouts.
An audience with the Great Julio, who KO’d 86 opponents in an extraordinary and legendary 107 fight career, is NOT for the Lily Livered! Plenty of laughter, jokes and lots of fun, with Julio, yet on his “Best” behavior, accompanied by Wife Miriam.
