Garcia vacates WBC 140lb belt, Matthysse v Postol ordered

Danny Garcia spoke to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and after a very emotive conversation and agreed to relinquish his Green and gold belt.

The World Boxing Council has therefore declared the WBC Superlightweight title vacant. Danny Garcia’s weight situation forces his decision to fight at welterweight and confirms his physical ability to compete in that divisi├│n after assesing the possibility of returning to 140.

The WBC is now ordering Victor Postol to fight Lucas Mathysse for the WBC Superlightweight championship.

Victor Postol has been the division┬┤s mandatory contender and had registered with the WBC in a step aside agreement with several provisions which all were complied with to his benefit since the Postol-Garcia will not happen. Lucas Mathysse who won the rights after beating Ruslan Provodnikov and the fight will be for the WBC undisputed super lightweight championship .

Danny Garcia conquered the WBC title defeating legendary Eric Morales and made several impressive title defenses including an impressive one against Amir Khan and the highlight of his career was the fight of the year in 2013 when he defeated the then WBC interim champion Lucas Mathysse .

Garcia has competed in over the weight fights recently and has notified the WBC of his concern in making the 140 limit. The WBC will coordinate a specific medical study of body mass composition to be performed at UCLA to determine the division in which he is safe to fight .

The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of honoring Danny Garcia with the designation of Champion Emeritus which will allow him to perform his medical tests and shall he be cleared to fight in super lightweight division, Garcia will have the right to challenge for the championship.
