Miguel Cotto reaffirmed his position as a main player on the world stage as the Puerto Rican emphatically retained his WBC middleweight title in Brooklyn on Saturday night.

The 34 year-old put a beatdown on Australian former unified champion Daniel Geale at the Barclays Center and is now ready to meet 154lb divisional rival Canelo Alvarez.

A catchweight of 155lbs has been laid down for the pay-per-view blockbuster set to take place in the fall, with the winner in line for a lucrative rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr should the pound for pound king decide to extend his career into 2016.

Cotto and Canelo were both previously defeated by Mayweather but have since rebuilt their careers at the top level.
