The 42 year-old had initially stated to ‘The Cruz Show’ that he thinks about coming back to boxing every day and that he believes his fitness levels are such that they would to allow him to ease back into full training for a pro bout.
De La Hoya also said that any return would be right at the very top tier, and in the immediate aftermath of his recent LA Fight Club at the Belasco Center, TMZ Sports asked ‘The Golden Boy’ outright whom he would choose for his next contest.
“If I ever come back I’ll fight Triple G!” said De La Hoya, alluding to the current middleweight king Gennady G. Golovkin.
Since stating that a comeback was possible, De La Hoya has been inundated with offers from the likes of veteran fighters ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley and Roy Jones Jr to pull on his gloves. Whether some sort of legends series may be on the cards remains to be seen, although De La Hoya’s comments on facing Golovkin have certainly got to be taken with a huge pinch of salt.
Golovkin is ten years younger than De La Hoya and has a 90 percent KO ratio to go with his tag of the most feared fighter in the sport. De La Hoya would have to have a death wish to seriously contemplate facing the Kazakh and at this point Mosley and Jones Jr would be more likely opponents for any shock return.
For now, my money is on De La Hoya staying happily retired though.
