Golovkin outguns Monroe Jr. in six

Golovkin, 33, had Monroe on the back-foot from early on in the fight and produced a superb left hand in the second round to drop the challenger hard. Another knockdown quickly followed as ‘GGG’ tried to end the contest in that session, although Monroe somehow survived and began to get into the fight in rounds three and four.

The Kazakh stepped up his efforts in the fifth though, and softened Monroe up before taking him out in the sixth with a crushing combination. Referee Jack Reiss seemed to ask Monroe if he wanted to go on, and after not getting a clear response, decided to halt the bout there and then.

With the victory, Golovkin now boasts 30th KO’s after what was amazingly his 20th early finish in a row – as only three fighters have managed to go the distance with the undisputed 160lb champion since his debut in 2006.

Fights with Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, Danny Jacobs, Andy Lee and the winner of David Lemieux v Hassan N’Dam for the IBF belt will all be targets for Golovkin, who once again proved why he is the most feared fighter on the planet to a worldwide audience.
