IN WHAT SHAPES AS THE MOST HOTLY anticipated all Queensland bouts since Kris George and Ozan Craddock met in March 2014, one of the countries rising stars Mat Casboult puts his undefeated record on the line against Toowoomba’s Darren Askew.
The pair will meet in a six rounder at junior welter weight on June 27 as part of the block buster card TGW & Smithy bring the big fights 10.
“I’m excited for this one,” Darren Askew said.
“I want to prove I’m Queensland’s number one prospect in this weight division so I need to beat Matt Casboult.
“No doubts it’s a tough fight and I’ll have to work hard to get the result but I have the confidence in myself and my team that if I do everything right it’s a fight I will win.
“If have aspirations this year of fighting for National and Regional titles so this is a must win.”
Matt Casboult, who hails from the Nerang PCYC, will bring to town a perfect 5-0 record. He boasts wins over the likes of Mark Ramirez – who Askew holds two victories over – Jarrett Owen and Quinton Donahue.
“This fight is a massive step up for Matt,” Casboult’s trainer Damien O’Mara said.
“We have been working over time in the gym and on the track to bring ourselves up to the level of fighter we aspire to become.
“Darren is an excellent boxer who possess all the skills and experience to become a champion and we respect him and are big fans of his work. However to be the best you have to beat the best and that’s what we are coming up to Toowoomba to do.
“While Matt is still young and relatively inexperienced compared to Darren we are not concerned about protecting Matts record we are hoping to fight the best fighters in the country in our weight division. We’re taking a page out of the book of all the truly great fighters and biting off more than we can chew and chewing like hell!
“We are especially proud to be fighting on this card as it’s a special night to remember the life of Braydon Smith who was a great featherweight. Well known and respected not only in the Darling Downs and the Gold Coast but in all of Australian boxing gyms.” O’Mara said.
Askew’s trainer/manager and TGW & Smithy Brings the big fights 10 Promoter Brendon Smith doesn’t hide his excitement when it comes to the Askew vs Casboult bout.
“This will be as good a fight as you will see anywhere in Australia this year,” Smith said.
“Darren Askew is one of the most beautiful boxer’s I’ve had anything to do with and I have a huge opinion of Matt Casboult.
“When we had Jack Asis prepping for his World title bout against Kye Mackenzie, Matt Casboult was one of our key sparring partners.
“That’s a fair indication of how highly we rate Matt Casboult.
“The winner of this bout will go on and challenge for a National or regional title later this year I have no doubt.
“It really is a must win for both men.
“I’m so proud to bring another big fight to the Darling Downs.
“This one will bring the house down, styles make fights and Darren Askew vs Matt Casboult will put on one hell of a show.
“I can’t wait.”
