Masterful Lomachenko dominates Rodriguez; Santa Cruz shutout

The 27 year-old amateur legend, competing in just his fifth pro fight, was in superb form from the first bell and had Rodriguez down in the fourth and eighth rounds.

Body shots did the damage to soften Rodriguez up before a beautiful combination in the ninth ended the Puerto Rican’s slim chances. The only downside was Rodriguez being docked two points for persistent low blows, although Lomachenko showed he had learned from experience against Orlando Salido and immediately complained to referee Robert Byrd.

None of it made a difference though as Lomachenko was miles above Rodriguez in class as fans and media alike now hold out hope of a massive unification with divisional number one Nicholas Walters later this year.

In a non-title fight, Leo Santa Cruz went through the motions over ten rounds at featherweight winning every round against Jose Cayetano in a drab affair.

Earlier, Chris Pearson out-pointed London-born Sid El Harrak in a snooze-fest of a contest that only came to life in the eighth round. Both fighter’s started the super welterweight bout tentatively, and coupled with the lack of atmosphere early on in the arena, failed to create any sparks. El Harrak shook Pearson in the eighth, although the American came back with shots of his own and was largely in control of the rest of the contest. Judges preserved Pearson’s unbeaten record after ten dull rounds by seeing the clash 99-91 (twice) and 98-92 in his favour.

In a battle of unblemished super middleweights, Jesse Hart stopped Mike Jimenez in the sixth round of a dominant performance to record a 17th win. Hart broke down Jimenez in the first five rounds before busting him up and taking him out in the next session as referee Tony Weeks had seen enough.

Undefeated super welterweight Brad Solomon remained perfect with a ten-round decision win over Adrian Granados in the first fight of the night. The 31 year-old engaged in a battle with the Mexican for the duration and scraped through 96-94 (twice) for Solomon who improves to 25-0, whilst the another had it 96-94 for Granados.
