Wins for Theophane and Smith; Gesta v Molina ends in draw

The 34 year-old Briton, who fights under the Floyd Mayweather banner, recovered from a knockdown in the final round to card a 96-93 (twice) victory with the judges and record a 38th career triumph in what was his 45th contest.

‘Treasure’ Theophane is edging towards facing one of the currently recognised champions in the super lightweight division and is now unbeaten in five bouts since losing out to another Mexican, Pablo Cesar Cano in September 2013.

Also on the bill, former IBF super welterweight champion Ishe ‘Sugar Shay’ Smith successfully recovered from his loss to Erislandy Lara to inflict a second straight defeat on Cecil McCalla and push his record to 27-7, whilst Ronald Gavril decisioned Oscar Riojas over eight rounds.

Elsewhere in California, Mercito Gesta and Carlos Molina battled to draw in a fight that does no favours to either boxer in their quest to move up the world rankings. A rematch may well be on the cards for the talented lightweights after judges failed to split them 96-94 (Gesta), 98-92 (Molina) and 95-95 after ten rounds.

On the undercard, Jeffrey Fontanez, Jason Quigley, Rafael Gramajo and Ruslan Madiev all scored knockout victories, whilst super middleweight Yamaguchi Falcao defeated Gerardo Ibarra wide on points over eight.
