Agony for Beltran: Misses weight, loses title chance (photos)
Hard-working lightweight Ray Beltran is facing up to the fact that he won’t be able to finally win a world title on Friday night after missing weight by just four ounces for his WBO title bout against Takahiro Ao.
The 33 year-old Mexican-American was handed a third opportunity to claim a version of the World Boxing Organisation belt after losing out to Ricky Burns controversially in 2013, before a wide points defeat to Terence Crawford last time out.
After scaling 135.4lbs at Thursday’s weight ceremony, only Ao will be able to pick up the vacant championship when the pair collide at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
It’s a devastating blow to Beltran, who needs a victory more than ever to keep his hopes of one day realising his dream alive.
