Shannon, who trained welterweights Matthew Hatton, Denton Vassell and former world champion Ricky Hatton during his career, is to appear in front of North West magistrates next week over an incident first reported in June of 2014.
The 59 year-old was famously at the side of ‘Hitman’ Hatton during his final fight against Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012 as the much-loved fighter was beaten via a tenth round knockout and hung up his gloves for good immediately after.
Brother Matthew almost claimed the IBO belt at 147lbs when fighting out a draw under Shannon against Lovemore Ndou in 2009, although respectably went the distance with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez when challenging for another world title in 2011.
More recently, Shannon oversaw Vassell’s wide points defeat to Viktor Plotnykov on the Carl Frampton v Chris Avalos IBF super bantamweight title undercard in Belfast – which saw his fighter miss out of a fringe version of the IBF welterweight title.
This police charge, if proven true, will send shockwaves through British boxing as Shannon has an upstanding reputation domestically.
