WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is closing in on a formal announcement for the first defense of his title as rumours gather that Argentine Jorge Heiland will get the nod for a summer clash.
Cotto’s advisor Gabriel Penagaricano was giving nothing away when asked straight up by WBN this week if Heiland was the favourite to land the fight, although the man himself stated that the June 6th date in New York was certain at this point in time.
“We will be back in the ring on June 6th and there are some possible rivals,” Cotto told the WBC this week.
On the possibility of Heiland being in the opposite corner to him in two months’ time, the Puerto Rican legend added: “Jorge Heiland is a high ranked contender and he had an amazing performance, recently knocking out Matthew Macklin. We signed a three bouts contract with Roc Nation. We have already reserved the June 6th date and we are just evaluating a rival for this commitment,” he said.
The four-weight world champion is notoriously secretive about the handling of his fight announcements, reminiscent of former rival Floyd Mayweather in some ways, with an official confirmation expected from Team Cotto in the coming days.
