Jose Martinez v Juan Herrera tops Mayagüez, PR this weekend

Undefeated Super Flyweight, Jose ‘Chiquiro’ Martinez, will be returning to his second home at the Palacio De Los Deportes in Mayagüez on April 4, headlining the Boxeo Al Máximo series presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions together with H2 Entertainment and Roc Nation Sports.

The 22 year old fighter born in Mayagüez, but who grew up and lives in the town of Las Marías, will be making his first main event appearance exposing his 13-0 and nine knockouts record against the veteran warrior Juan ‘Cowi’ Herrera (10-8). The combat, is for the vacant 115 pounds Latino title from the World Boxing Council.

“I’m very happy to be fighting in Mayaguez, my second home,” said Martinez. “It’s a great opportunity to fight for my people of Las Marias, I hope they come out to support me.” Herrera is a fighter known for giving good fights, as evidenced by the fact that in his last fight he defeated the experienced, Miguel ‘Zamurai’ del Valle, and prior to that lasting 10 rounds against former world champion, Brian Viloria. “It will be a tough fight, but we are preparing for that,” said Martinez, who trains in Añasco under the command of Julio Ortiz said. “I think Herrera is coming to pressure me because we will be fighting at home; he will want to steal the show,” he added, “but it will not be.” “We’ll be ready for whatever he brings.”

The program will be the third presented on the island this year by Miguel Cotto Promotions with H2 Entertainment and the second from their partnership with Roc Nation Sports owned by Jay Z.

In addition, two young prospects from Humacao, Puerto Rico will be back in the ring: undeafeted bantamweight Freddy Ortiz (4-0 and four) will collide in six rounds with the more experienced Jiovani Fuentes (5-6 and four). While Flyweight Jantony Ortiz (3-0 and two), member of 2012 Olympic team, collides in four rounds with Jaxel Marrero from Bayamon. Also in action bantaweight hot prospect Ricardo ‘Richy’ Rodriguez (2-0, two), will go up against Jose Santiago from San Juan in four rounds. In other exciting bout lightweight Miguel Canino (5-0 and two) from Dorado will collide in four rounds with Mike Erosa of Vega Baja.
