Golovkin heaps praise on southpaw challenger Monroe

WBC 19/03/2015

Cherubic World Boxing Council Interim middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin is returning to Los Angeles to take on Willie Monroe Jr at the Inglewood Forum on May 16th.

After easily defeating Marco Antonio Rubio last year at the Stub Hub Center in Carson, California and then traveling to Monte Carlo to finally overwhelm Martin Murray, GGG is seeking to stay super busy rather than be left to his own devices.

“I want to fight Monroe as he’s younger than me and I think he’s an interesting boxer. He’s a southpaw and a great southpaw,” said Gennady, who’s looking to further improve a mighty impressive record of 32-0 with 29 KO´s – 19 in a row.

Gennady also sagely observed: “He knows how to move, he’s not frightened and he’s a great boxer.”

Monroe Jr., aged 28, has a record of 20 fights, with only one defeat by Darnell Boone. But he’s only knocked out six opponents. He won the Boxcino Tournament, and after that, he defeated Brandon Adams. He’s the NABA middleweight Champion.

Willie Jr has a proud family boxing legacy. He’s the great nephew of Willie “The Worm” Monroe, who defeated Marvin Hagler via UD on March 9th, 1976. Marvin avenged this TKO’ing him twice.

It’s no secret that Gennady has plainly stated that he wants to fight at least four times this year. He claimed that his next goal after this match is a fight WBC middleweight Champion Miguel Angel Cotto.
