Exciting junior-welterweight Paul Kamanga can’t afford to slip up against Stone van Aswegen at Emperors Palace next month.
This is because he’s been promised a crack at IBO welterweight champion Ali Funeka in the aftermath.
Promoter Rodney Berman says the Van Aswegen fight is a warm-up, adding that Kamanga must do more than win; he must win convincingly.
He ought to do so against Van Aswegen, a gritty local with a 6-2-1 record. The Boksburg boxer will no doubt relish the opportunity of fighting Kamanga, making it a dangerous clash for the unbeaten man from DRC.
Unbeaten in 14 outings, Kamanga scored his best win in his last fight, a solid points victory over tough veteran Kaizer Mabuza. Even so, Funeka would represent a massive step up, but his camp, led by manager Anton Gilmore, has great belief in his promise.
The April 13 fight card is headlined by a fight for the vacant SA junior-welterweight championship between Warren Joubert and Grant Fourie.
Flo Simba features on the undercard.
