Mauricio Sulaiman, the World Boxing Council President, has confirmed that Miguel Cotto must face Gennady Golovkin in an obligatory defence.
Kazakh “GGG” defeated Britain’s Martin Murray last weekend in Monte Carlo, successfully defending his WBC interim middleweight championship and Cotto is the absolute Champion of the division. Genaddy is the official mandatory challenger.
However, the Champion has a voluntary defence, but if he wins he must fight Golovkin.
“Miguel Cotto will have a voluntary defense. He will choose his rival. But the winner will have to face Golovkin,” Mauricio stressed.
Possible opponents for Cotto are Timothy Bradley and Erislandy Lara. The fight Is scheduled for June at a venue to be determined.
