De La Hoya switches Canelo’s Kirkland fight to May 9, eyes up future Cotto clash
Golden Boy Promotions President, Oscar De La Hoya announces that due to the mega-bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, on May 2nd, the duel of “Canelo” Vs. Kirkland will be on May 9th at the “Minute Maid Park” in Houston, Texas.
De La Hoya also wants “Canelo” to fight Puerto Rican, WBC middleweight Champion Miguel Ángel Cotto, after that, beaming: ” This would be an amazing bout as both of them are great warriors!”
Álvarez (44-1-1, 31 KO´s) last fought on July 12th, 2014, when he defeated Cuban, Erislandy Lara.
Kirkland (32-1, 28 KO´s) has not fought in more than a year. The last time he was in the ring was on December 7th, 2013 when he won against previously undefeated Glen Tapia.
Alvarez has already fought in Texas, when he defeated Austin Trout in April 20th, 2013. On that occasion 40,000 thousand fans attended. Golden Boy Promotions says that for this clash the attendance will be an estimated 60,000 boxing fans.
