The Mexican, who like Hopkins campaigns between 168 and 175 pounds, is possibly aiming to spark up interest in a potential fight with ‘The Alien’ and will have certainly angered his legion of fans with his controversial outburst.
Chavez, 28, has not only accused Hopkins of faking injury in his world title clash with Chad Dawson back in 2011, but has branded the Philadelphian a ‘coward’ for a less-than entertaining fight style the 50 year-old has adopted in his later years as a professional.
“You call yourself a legend? A dirty, coward fighter who doesn’t give the fans a show,” said Chavez. “I can’t smoke whatever you say, but I never faked an injury or been a coward like you were with Chad Dawson.”
Hopkins recently moved down to super-middleweight following his record-breaking feats at light-heavyweight, but was overlooked by WBA super-middleweight champion Carl Froch for a possible summer fight in England.
Froch, who is currently out injured, is hoping to finalize a Las Vegas clash with ‘JC Jr’ himself in what could turn out to be his swansong bout, although Hopkins may now attempt to scupper those plans after hearing rival Chavez’s latest rant.
