After taking part in a press conference last week announcing his January 31 headliner against Kevin Johnson, Olympic gold medallist and undefeated heavyweight Anthony Joshua took part in an one and one interview with Sky Sports News HQ.
Towards the end of the question and answer session with Hayley McQueen, one fighter’s name cropped up more than any other as Joshua was asked if he would consider a clash with Tyson Fury after witnessing the British rivals victory over Dereck Chisora last weekend.
Immediately upon McQueen finishing her sentence, and with a wry smile, Joshua’s eyes lit up as the Londoner stated: “You’re going to have to ask Mr. Fury about that one.” Pushed further by the presenter on agreeing to face the outspoken British and European champion, Joshua eventually gave the expected reply; “One million percent,” he said.
McQueen pressed again, this time for a who would come out on top in the fight if the pair did meet, to which Joshua then jokingly said: “Me with one foot on him!”
The 25 year-old certainly doesn’t lack any confidence and why should he? Standing a whopping 6ft 6ins tall and having the perfect physique and power to be a top division ruler of the future, money certainly is to be made by Joshua against the likes of Fury and even former world title holder David Haye.
Not to get too carried away though, Joshua is only ten fights into his career, although being pitted this early by Hearn against someone as durable as American Johnson shows just how far his promoter believes he can go.
This coming year is expected to be a break out one for Joshua whereby the big-hitter could be on the brink of a world championship shot in twelve months’ time, but saying that any possible UK super-fights may have to wait until 2016 at the earliest.
