Saunders could miss out on WBO chance as Korobov v Lee is requested

Despite recently announcing that a bout between Russian Korobov and Billy Joe Saunders was likely to take place in the UK on November 29, Valcarcel has now said that Lee is in pole position for the title opportunity.

“I have referred to the WBO World Championship Committee a request from promoters Top Rank and Frank Warren for Matt Korobov vs Andy Lee,” stated Valcarcel.

This news could mean that a domestic contest between Saunders and rival Chris Eubank Jr is be back on after WBN recently learned that ‘there is still hope’ that the two can work out their differences from a source close to Frank Warren.

Korobov had also told WBN this week that he was willing to travel to London to fight Saunders in an undefeated clash, although an encounter with Lee gives Top Rank the option of staging the fight on US soil instead.

Whatever happens, Korobov is the first name in the frame to fight for Peter Quillin’s old title and it is just a matter of working out who will be in the opposite corner when the belt is finally contested.
