Invincible Rigo: Cuban way too good for his own good

The latest to shun a stipulated contest is Mexican-American Chris Avalos, who aims to chase after a shot at IBF belt holder Carl Frampton, rather than accept the WBO’s offer to meet the double Olympic champion.

Rigondeaux, 34 today, will now face a wait whilst the WBO attempt to secure the next official challenger in line. That happens to be Filipino Genesis Servania – the current Inter-Continental title holder. Servania is undefeated in 25 bouts and holds eleven stoppages, earning his place as the number two by defeating Jose Cabrera in ten rounds at the World Trade Centre in Dubai on September 5.

Should the 23 year-old accept, ‘Rigo’ would no doubt be a clear favourite for another routine defence in the ilk of his recent one-round demolition job on Sod Kokietgym in Macao, China.

Of his 14 outings in the paid ranks, Rigondeaux has not been fully tested yet, despite meeting two former world champions, one of which once held the number two position in the pound for pound rankings at the time in Nonito Donaire.

It seems Rigondeaux’s taming of Donaire has the whole division running scared as not one of the current champions seems to be willing to enter negotiations despite a lot of talk. Carl Frampton, Scott Quigg and Leo Santa Cruz seem more interested in facing each other, or anyone other than the formidable Cuban, and only the latter has even mentioned Rigondeaux as a possible future opponent.

A move through the divisions may be the only way Rigondeaux can bring about some higher-profile encounters in the coming years – as the pay-per-view money men continue to avoid the talented fighter like the plague.
