Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn is celebrating yet another crowning night for one of his star fighters as Kell Brook produced a career-best performance to take the IBF welterweight title from Shawn Porter in America.
Brook, 28, used tactical prowess and superior strength to fend off Porter in Carson, and Hearn firmly believes that a fight with pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather is on the cards for ‘The Special One’ in the near future.
“I think you have to say Kell is now in the running to face Floyd Mayweather,” Hearn confirmed to BBC Radio Sheffield.
“Everyone in the division wants to fight Floyd, but if you hold a world title then you are more likely to face him than if you don’t.
“He’s an obvious opponent and Mayweather is a target for 2015,” he added.
A return in December looks likely for Brook, who will possibly face one of the top 10 IBF-ranked fighters, before a huge spring clash with Mayweather will be within reach for the Yorkshireman.
Should his bid to challenge Mayweather in May fail, Brook has the mouth-watering fallback option of a massive domestic super-bout with former world champion Amir Khan to focus on instead.
