Legendary trainer Freddie Roach has reacted to talk of ex-fighter Amir Khan facing Manny Pacquiao by predicting that youngster Frankie Gomez would knock the Briton out now if they fought next.
Khan, 28, is on the lookout for an opponent for December and has been linked to a fight with Pacquiao next year, although Roach told Kugan Cassius of IFL TV that if Gomez got his chance he would take it with both hands.
“(Pacquiao v Khan) could possibly happen,” said Roach. “Manny’s had him down a couple of times in here (the Wild Card Gym) and I have no problem with that fight. I would take that fight in a second.”
Roach then told Cassius: “My young fighter Frankie Gomez, I’d take him to get in with Amir Khan right now also. Right now, he’ll knock Khan out,” predicted the famous coach.
Californian Gomez recently defeated Vernon Paris by a wide points margin at light-welterweight to record an 18th career win without loss. The 22 year-old could make the transition to 147 with ease though should Khan take up the challenge of Roach and give the prospect a surpise opportunity to hit the big time – instead of eyeing current high-profile targets Devon Alexander and Robert Guerrero.
