Rubio: Since Cotto doesn’t want to, I’m fighting GGG on October 18!

The 34 year-old, who is the current interim WBC belt holder, was hoping to challenge Miguel Cotto for the full title later this year, but now says an offer to fight Golovkin could be sealed in the near future.

“Since Miguel Cotto didn’t want to fight me, we are fighting Gennady Golovkin on October 18 (instead),” said Rubio via his social media account.

“I never back down from anyone, the battle is coming. We’re coming back to HBO and we look forward to fighting Golovkin for all (his belts). Come out with your hands up. KO!”

Rubio then clarified that a deal may even be done as early as Friday as the tough Mexican looks to claim a world title at the third time of asking.

“Terms were accepted and my promoters are looking to close contracts tomorrow.”

No word has yet come from Golovkin’s promoters K2 or indeed HBO – as the formidable puncher aims to build on his stunning win over Daniel Geale in July when he stopped the Aussie in three painful rounds.
