Angel Garcia: They say Danny is a cherry picker, but Salka will be FOTY

The elder Garcia, who has overseen his son’s considerable rise to the top of the 140lb rankings, was responding to calls that Salka was hand-picked by those around the unbeaten fighter on the back of some tough recent contests.

Garcia Jr. has been operating against some the top names for over three years now in a relentless streak, although Angel says this weekend’s bout is not a step down despite questioning of his opponent.

“The fight is going to be a great fight. I don’t care what the people say,” said Garcia.

“They’re calling Danny ‘cherry picker, blackberry picker’ but it doesn’t matter because he still has to go out there and get his (victory). I told him to be a fighter. Nobody ever gave him anything … my job is not to worry about Salka. It’s to worry about Danny Garcia.

“It’s going to be called the ‘Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia Show.’ This is going to be the Fight of the Year. Salka is in the wrong predicament right now because that bad image made Danny a better fighter. Danny is 100 percent,” he added.

Salka, 31, has lost three of 22 bouts in his career and only has three stoppages to his name, but has been super-confident that he can cause yet another upset in a year of turnaround victories.

The Pennsylvanian can potentially mimic Chris Algieri in coming from nowhere to put himself in with a chance of challenging the best operators at 140 and 147, although has a tall order on his hands against Garcia in Brooklyn.
