Chavez v Alvarez is on! – Well…the brothers at least

This week, it was confirmed that the fight between Omar Chavez and Ramón Alvarez, the brothers of the more famous Julio and Canelo, will take place on 13 September and is very likely to be staged in Veracruz.

Chavez, 24, (32-2-1, 22 KOs) will collide with Alvarez, who is 27 years old and 19-4-2, 12 KOs on neutral ground, because either did not want to fight on the others home patch.

This rivalry obviously has special interest because of the bad blood between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Saul Alvarez over the past four years, a clash that has more narrow chances and less opportunities to be made as the former moves up in weight.

After days of negotiations between the Ramón, Zanfer and his older brother Rigoberto Alvarez at Zanfer headquarters in Tijuana, an agreement was reached which was satisfactory to all parties and the preparations can now begin.

“I have always wanted to face Omar as he was challenging me and now I have my chance to defeat him,” explained Ramon.

While Chávez expressed his satisfaction to be going up against Alvarez.

“I have confirmed of the fight with Alvarez,” explained Chavez over the telephone. “I think it’s a fight of curiosity as none of our brothers have fought before. Canelo almost fought my brother at the beginning of his career, but in the end did not, but beyond that I think this is the next best fight,” he added.

“Ramon has speed, hits strong I am told, but I really respect him as a fighter. It’s a fight I must win,” continued Chavez. “I think in the last two years I’ve had better fights with rivals of higher quality and won them,” said the son of the great Julio Cesar Chavez.

“I hope the winner has the opportunity to get a world title. I was told winner of September 13 may go for a championship and that would be my goal,” he added.
