Mares back to winning ways; Herrera claims interim title; Vargas downs JuanMa

After ten rounds the thre ringside judges card 98-92 (twice) and 96-94 as Mares came through unscathed despite suffering a cut in the fourth round.

Also on the card, hard-working light-welterweight Mauricio Herrera followed up his impressive performance in defeat against world title holder Danny Garcia in March with an entertaining victory over Johan Perez.

Herrera edged out a majority decision on the scorecards with two judges handing him the win 116-112, whilst a third mimicked my card by seeing the contest a 114-114 draw.

With this latest triumph, Herrera picks up the interim WBA title at 140lbs and moves another step closer to second shot at Garcia’s titles whether the current king remains at the weight or not.

Also on the bill, Francisco Vargas dismantled Juan Manuel Lopez and forced the ex-world champion to be pulled out on his stool after three completed rounds. Lopez attempted to trade with the younger Vargas, but was ultimately no match and should now reconsider his decision to continue with his career following some bad stoppage losses.

After the contest, Lopez gave nothing away on whether he intended to keep fighting.
