Alfonso Gomez scores winning return in Las Vegas

Phil Jay 10/07/2014

Former world title challenger Alfonso Gomez successfully notched another victory by convincingly out-pointing Ed Paredes at ‘The Joint’ in the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Despite being put down by Paredes with shots that could have just as easily been called slips in the fourth and sixth rounds, Gomez went on to card a unanimous points decision to push his record to 24-6-2.

The 33 year-old was returning from an injury-blighted spell following his 2012 loss to current IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter, and on this evidence still has much to offer the 147lb division.

Gomez looked sharp against a seasoned campaigner in Paredes, and not having taken too much punishment in his career seems to have stood the ex-Contender star in good stead for his veteran years.

This loss for Paredes, 29, is his first in five years and puts a serious dent in the Hollywood-based fighter’s world title ambitions. The triumph will look good on Gomez’s C.V though as the Mexican eyes a shot at a belt holder in the next twelve months.

Also on the Nevada bill, Joseph Diaz Jr out-boxed Ramiro Robles over ten rounds, whilst Diego De La Hoya stopped Miguel Tamayo in five to improve to 6-0 with his fifth career stoppage.
