Korobov downs Uzcategui twice in points win, Zewski KO’s Doku Jr

Phil Jay 29/06/2014

Russian middleweight Matt Korobov took his record to 24-0 at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha with a decisive ten round points victory over Jose Uzcategui.

After a good start, Korobov was guilty of allowing Uzacategui back into the fight towards the mid-rounds, until a right hand put the Venezuelan in the seventh. Korobov followed it up with another knockdown just seconds later as the 31 year-old opened up a telling lead on the cards.

Uzcategui was effectively out of the fight at that point – leaving Korobov to see out the last three rounds and take the fight 97-91 in my eyes. Two of the judges agreed, whislt the other had it 96-92 as Korobov ended Uzcategui’s 22-fight winning streak to take the vacant WBO Inter-Continental title.

Earlier in the night, emerging welterweight star Mikael Zewski proved too strong for Prince Doku Jr as the Canadian powered his way to a fourth round knockout victory to improve to 24-0.

The 25 year-old won the first three rounds at a canter before stepping up his work in the fourth and pinning Doku on the ropes with a flurry of unanswered punches.

Referee Jay Nady let Zewski complete his considerable pounding until the helpless Doku hit the floor in a heap and proceeded to count the full ten as the Ghanaian made no effort to get up. With the win, Zewski now has 19 stoppages on his unblemished record and picks up the vacant NABF welterweight title.
