WBN have been exclusively informed today that the IBF welterweight title clash between champion Shawn Porter and mandatory challenger Kell Brook will now take place on September 6.
International Boxing Federation Chairman Lindsey Tucker outlined the date that has now been received by the organisation for the stipulated contest, which had a deadline of September 7 to be finalized.
Porter and Brook, who are both undefeated, had been attempting to make the fight for the recently-announced August 9 bill at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn featuring Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson, but contracts were not received in time to seal the deal.
After some scepticism about whether the fight will finally go ahead, Tucker stated that: “The date we have for Porter-Brook is September 6, 2014,” when contacted by World Boxing News early on Friday.
Official confirmation is yet to be released from either Golden Boy or Matchroom Boxing on whether the date is set in stone, but at this moment in time, the fight is on for the specified date as far as the IBF are concerned.
The clash represents Porter’s second defence of the title he took from Devon Alexander so impressively in December and retain in great fashion against Paulie Malignaggi in April, whilst Brook will participate in his maiden world championship fight.
Sheffield-based Brook has been waiting almost two years for his opportunity following delays for several different reasons, and hopefully this time ‘The Special One’ will finally get his chance on September 6.
