Van Heerden’s American dream edges closer with ShoBox TV date

The 27 year-old made the bold move Stateside in December, leaving his home and world title behind, and has since claimed back-to-back victories against Cosme Rivera and Ray Narh.

Van Heerden, whose record is 21-1-1, with 11 stoppages, has now been added to Showtime’s ShoBox card next month, alongside unbeated contenders Antoine Douglas, Atlantez Fox, Jerry Odom and Wanzell Ellison.

Cecil McCalla will be in the opposite corner in a ten round contest as ‘The Heat’ attempts to put an end to the Maryland fighter’s impressive 18-0 record in his US TV showcase.

“Everything is signed and my fight contract says I am fighting 25th July at Turning Stone Casino in NY on ShowBox against unbeaten Cecil McCalla, which I am happy about,” Van Heerden confirmed to World Boxing News.

“I’m just glad to be out here again fighting and being live on TV motivates me even more. I want to go out there, look good and get the win.”

The southpaw has been spending the last weeks sharing training sessions with world champion fighter’s in Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez, something which Van Heerden will look to put into practice in Verona.

“Sparring with Cotto and Canelo really gives me the motivation like never before,” he said. “I know McCalla is unbeaten so I have to go there and do my job. I have to beat him up as he hasn’t fought anybody in my calibre. I have been in the ring with stronger and much more experienced guys and have to show that in the fight.

“I respect McCalla and don’t take him lightly, but I am just happy to be in the ring again and hopefully after this I will land a big fight against a world class fighter,” added Van Heerden.
