WBC silver welterweight champion Amir Khan has given the biggest indication yet that a grudge match against domestic rival Kell Brook can happen at some point in 2015.
The 27 year-old, who is being linked to a fight against Manny Pacquiao in November, has been called out by undefeated Brook for the past two years – but has so far been dismissive of the pair ever sharing the ring.
Khan has cited Brook’s resume as the main reason for the fight not happening as the Bolton fighter wants ‘The Special One’ to prove himself at the very top before instigating any negotiations between their teams. With Brook now set to face world champion Shawn Porter as stipulated by the IBF, Khan says the chances of massive UK clash will improve significantly if the Yorkshireman prevails.
“At the moment he (Brook) isn’t on the agenda,” Khan told The Sheffield Star. “He has his hands full with Shawn Porter but if he wins then he could definitely be an opponent in the future.
“Kell has to prove himself first. He has to do that against someone credible. I can actually see him not even taking the fight (with Porter) but if he does then fair play, I take my hat off to him and wish him all the best.
“If he wins then it’s worth me an him getting inside the ring at some point within a year.”
The had been some suggestions from fans in Britain that Khan is aware of the talent possessed by Brook and therefore wants no part of a engaging in battle with such a dangerous opponent, something the former 140lb king dismissed out of hand.
“I want the biggest fights out there now. We want the best and I won’t be avoiding anyone. If anything, it’s people who have been avoiding me,” he stated.
“We’ll have to work hard to get them and keep winning but I’m past the stage now where I have to prove anything to anyone.
“I’ve taken fights in the past to excite the fans and now I want the ones that are going to excite me. That’s important.
“I want the ones against the very best in the business, the ones against people where you are going to be so motivated because you’ve dreamed about facing them for years,” added Khan.
