WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez is on the lookout for an impressive performance by four-weight world title holder Jorge Arce on Saturday night as the 126lb king seeks out a future clash between the two.
The 32 year-old has been linked to all manner of opponents since his technical decision win over Clive Atwell last month, but Gonzalez is hopeful of facing compatriot Arce in the fall if he comes through Jorge Lacierva in Chiapas.
“The fight with Arce is close. It all really depends on the result of his next fight. If he wins, we’ll. be fighting soon. It could take pace in Sinaloa by August or September, but if Arce loses, I would fight in USA,” said Gonzalez.
“It would be a fantastic fight, and it would be historic, because it would be broadcasted by Televisa and TV Azteca. I’m also willing to face Travieso on his turf,” he added.
Arce, 34, returned to the ring in November following a brief retirement on the back of his dismal knockout defeat to Nonito Donaire in 2012 and has since scored two stoppages to take his career victories to 63. ‘Travieso’ has lost seven times in a lengthy career and has been halted four times.
