Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has informed World Boxing News that he was halted from participating in Tuesday’s media conference call to talk about fighter Vasyl Lomachenko’s upcoming world title fight with Gary Russell Jr.
Arum was due to be involved as both fighters discussed their upcoming vacant WBO featherweight title clash on June 21 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Califorina, although the experienced promoter was pulled from proceedings at the last minute.
The move is yet another sign that tensions are still running high despite Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya’s attempts to oversee harmony between his company, Top Rank and all those involved in any future promotions.
Amateur star Lomachenko is represented by Arum, whilst Russell is a part of De La Hoya’s team, but there is also the wishes of broadcasters Showtime to consider as they have a say in the fight, along with respected boxing figure Al Haymon.
Despite what seems to be a conflict of interests, today’s call has gone ahead without Arum on the line, but this may not be the end of the matter as the powers that be jockey for position following the recent Golden Boy shake-up.
There had already been a disagreement in the initial purse bid to make the California title fight, which was eventually won by Golden Boy – who negotiated to stage Russell v Lomachenko on a Showtime tripleheader topped by the return of Robert Guerrero.
