Cotto and Martinez to fight for 6th generation WBC title

Cotto challenges Martinez for his middleweight version at Madison Square Garden in New York as the Puerto Rican attempts to win a world championship in a fourth different weight division.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman asked for the fans opinion to decide the greatest champions of all time under the banner of the World Boxing Council, with over 85,000 votes cast and two former greats in each division taking the accolades.

Those past champions will now feature of the new line of WBC belts and either Cotto or Martinez will become the first to proudly sport one around their waste should they come out victorious later this evening. Carlos Monzon and Marvin Hagler took the middleweight nod and will grace the title belt on offer tonight.

“Saturday will be an historic day for boxing, because the winner of the WBC middleweight megafight between world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez and challenger Miguel Cotto will be awarded the new WBC belt “Generation 6″ for the first time,” Sulaiman told World Boxing News.

“The latest edition of the famous green and gold WBC belt encapsulates the image of our great and forever-remembered President Jose Sulaiman, The King of Boxing Muhammad Ali, plus the pictures of two of the WBC greatest champions in the respective division, who were, of course, chosen by boxing fans.”
