Liverpool-based Londoner Courtney Fry has amazingly landed a WBU cruiserweight title shot at former pound for pound king Roy Jones Jr in the summer.
The 39-year-old’s is set to square off against the legendary American, even though he has lost his last two bouts, after manager Neil Marsh revealed the news to WBN today.
Jones Jr v Fry is scheduled to take place in Riga, Latvia on July 26 and comes as the former British title challenger was wondering where his career may go following defeats to Welsh fighters Nathan King and Enzo Maccarinelli.
The former was just a four-round bout, so Marsh elevating Fry from such a low-key loss at Deeside Leisure Centre to at shot at Jones Jnr, 45, for a unrecognised world title is a minor miracle.
Multi-weight world champion Jones won the WBU belt with a points win over Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf in Russia last year, but once had the prestigious honour of holding the WBA heavyweight title at his peak.
Those days are long gone though for the one-time great, as Jones is now just a travelling showman holding out hope of once again regaining his glory days. Jones defeated the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Felix Trinidad at best, but also suffered a loss to Joe Calzaghe later in his career.
