Derry Mathews will make the first defence of his reclaimed British lightweight title when the Liverpudlian meets undefeated Terry ‘Turbo’ Flanagan on July 26th at the Phones 4U Arena in Manchester.
The 30 year-old took the belt from Martin Gethin last week at the Olympia in his hometown and has immediately been thrust into a clash against the dangerous Flanagan on the challenger’s own turf.
Flanagan, 24, has a perfect 24-0 record with eight stoppages, reaching that total on the same bill as Mathews on May 10 with a dominant second round stoppage win over Bulgarian journeyman Yordan Vasilev.
The pair will now meet in what looks on paper to have all the makings of a domestic Fight of the Year contender as flashy technician Flanagan meets the power and guile of Mathews for the coveted Lonsdale Belt.
This latest clash adds to Billy Joe Saunders v Emanuele Blandamura for the vacant European middleweight title, Liam Smith’s defence of the British 154lb title against Nav Mansouri and Cromer-native Liam Walsh, who is also set to appear on the bill.
Top of the bill, of course, is the European and vacant British heavyweight title fight between rivals Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury, who meet for the second time on the BoxNation-televised event.
