Macklin fumes as Geale enters Golovkin talks, claims ‘stitch up’

Middleweight contender Matthew Macklin has made his feelings known as previously scheduled opponent Daniel Geale has now been linked to a fight with Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin in the summer.

Macklin, 31, was due to face the Australian as he continues his comeback from his own loss to Golovkin in June 2013, but was distraught to learn that the fight was cancelled after headliner Mike Perez suffered an injury, forcing him to pull the plug on his clash with Bryant Jennings.

That has allowed Geale to replace Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in the discussions to challenge Golovkin for his 160lb belts in July, leaving Macklin with his own conspiracy theories on why he has been squeezed out.

“Very strange how Chavez vs GGG fight falls through, (then) Geale vs me is off. 24hrs later Geale in talks to fight GGG in July,” pointed out Macklin.

“All I’m saying is GGG is promoted by K2. GGG needs an opponent for July with no Chavez fight. Perez also promoted by K2.

“Jennings and Geale (are) both promoted by Gary Shaw. GGG is HBO’s poster boy (and is) in need of a credible opponent for his July date now Chavez fight has fallen through.

“My fight with Geale is off, then less than 24hrs later it’s confirmed negotiations for a fight with GGG! Do the maths!”

Switching back to the initial reason that his May 24 event was ‘postponed,’ Macklin then added:

“Perez didn’t get injured. HBO and K2 pulled the plug because they didn’t want Geale (one of very few credible opponents for GGG) getting beaten (by me)!

“Then they’d have no credible opponent for him for July. Perez injury is complete bullshit (and a) stitch up!”

Strong words from two-time world title challenger Macklin, who now faces a scramble for an opponent in the next few weeks with a possible all-Irish encounter with Andy Lee also off the table.

Lee, a long-time rival of Macklin, faces John Jackson on the June 7 Cotto v Martinez bill in Madison Square Garden and with both him and Geale potentially out of the picture, the former European champion is fast running out of options.
