Maidana manager explains ‘blank contract’ as judge blocks Mayweather purse

Phil Jay 19/04/2014

Argentinian hardman Marcos Maidana is in the midst of a legal wrangle following claims by former trainer Guillermo Serra that he is still under a managerial contract with him until 2016.

The 30 year-old, who is gearing up to face pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. in just two weeks’ time, is now having to fend off a judges ruling that his multi-million dollar purse for the fight must be held until a conclusion is reached with Serra.

According to current manager Sebastian Contursi, the legal situation that has evolved since has no substance and WBA welterweight champion Maidana has already launched an appeal to what Contursi cites as a meaningless and fabricated contract.

“Guillermo Serra was one of Maidana nine trainers in his career and he was only Maidana’s trainer as a pro during July 2004 and December 2006,” Contursi told World Boxing News.

“Now he has filed a complaint before a Santa Fe judge named Claudio Bermudez pretending that he is his manager and showing a contract that allegedly runs from 2008-2016. That contract was allegedly signed back in 2004, which originally had left a blank spot on the line that establishes the date of start and expiration. Apparently that blank spot was filled in as recently as 2008 and now Serra is claiming a millionaire sum of money from Marcos.

“Serra and Maidana never saw each other after their last fight as fighter-trainer back on December 22, 2006, and at that time Maidana’s manager was Mario Margossian, not Serra.

“Amazingly, the judge has favoured Serra’s claim so far, and he ordered a preliminary measure aiming to get hold of Marcos purse. This is incredible and our lawyers have already appealed this ruling.

“We hope the judge will overrule the order and if not, we are going to obtain lawyers in the US as a US judge would have the last word in a case like this.

“We are sure that any US judge will be surprised to see a case like this even brought before a court,” he added.

This is the last thing that ‘Chino’ Maidana needs so close to the biggest fight of his life and Contursi is eyeing a swift and successful conclusion to what he deems to be outlandish claims from a former team member trying to cash in.
