EXCLUSIVE: Golovkin heading to 168, Chavez Jr. deal on the cards

Negotiations have been ongoing for some time with former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for a proposed July contest, and Sanchez says only the finer details are left as both sides close in on an official agreement.

“Since his Kazakhstan traditional mourning period is over, Gennady realizes it’s time to get back to work,” Sanchez told World Boxing News.

“I have been getting reports and pictures from his manager Oleg Hermann of him running and doing workouts in the mornings, so he is very anxious to get back in the ring, resume his destructive trek, and on to history.

“Tom Loeffler and Bob Arum should have the minor details that are left to settle done by the beginning of next week, so hopefully we will be treated to a historical event with Chavez Jr. at the fabulous Forum of Los Angeles in the summer.”

Sanchez was then asked if the fight is certain to be at 168lbs, to which he replied: “It will be at 168.”

‘GGG’ was scheduled to fight in a warm-up contest in April, although his family tragedy ended the HBO date, and the WBN Fighter of the Year now readies himself to take a step up the divisions.

The 32-year-old has always stated that he would be willing to meet any fighter between 154 and 168lbs, with a clash against Chavez Jr. having all the makings of a classic match-up between two stars of the sport.
