Canelo v Lara: Schaefer confirms top-rated 154lb PPV clash

The light-middleweight super-fight pits two of the best fighters in the division against each other in what has all the makings of a classic match-up between a technically gifted boxer and a fearsome and respected puncher.

Alvarez, 23, and 31 year-old Lara, who have both suffered just one loss in the careers, stand on the cusp of a world title shot, with the winner certain to be in line to face one of the current belt holders later in 2014.

Question marks a still being held over the situation of the WBC and WBA titles at 154lbs as Floyd Mayweather continues to be recognised by both the World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association despite having no intention of defending the straps.

Whether GBP will pursue the possibility of a vacant championship bout for July in a bid to have the Mayweather matter resolved is unclear at this point, but that would make the most sense under the circumstances.

‘Money’ still holds the WBA belt he ripped from Alvarez when taking his ‘0’ last year, a title that had Lara as interim champion, although the WBA seem as reluctant as the WBC to displace the pound for pound king Mayweather from his lofty position.

More details on the undercard are expected shortly.
