Shannon Briggs takes Klitschko frustration out on Maurenzo Smith

Former world heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs scored a crushing first-round knockout win over a hapless Maurenzo Smith to claim victory in his comeback fight after three and a half years away.

The last time the 42-year-old graced the ring, Briggs lost out to Vitali Klitschko in a bruising decision over twelve rounds in Germany but has since sparked a feud with his younger brother, Wladimir.

Briggs, who claims to be the last American to hold a rated world title, was recently videoed embarking on a one-person rampage at a Hollywood gym, even throwing and hitting the current top-division king with a shoe.

Those frustrations would have been slightly eased with the manner of Briggs’ return to action at the Double Tree Hotel in Tampa, Florida, on Friday as ‘The Cannon’ cruised to victory with a fourth straight first-round win, barring the 2010 Klitschko loss.

Also in action on US soil was middleweight world title prospect Gilberto Ramirez Sanchez as the Mexican dismantled Giovanni Lorenzo in five rounds at the Mandalay Bay. Mericito Gesta stopped Edgar Riovalle in the eighth round in San Diego.
