Irish middleweights Matthew Macklin and Andy Lee are hoping to land lucrative places on the bill at Madison Square Garden on June 7 as Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martniez do battle in the main event.
The two talented boxers took to social media to agree to fight each other in the summer after both had originally missed out on snaring world title fights against any of the current crop of world champions.
Lee, 29, made the first move by offering 31 year-old Macklin the contest, with the two-time world title challenger firstly agreeing, before proposing the date as the chief support to the Martinez v Cotto bout.
Obviously the fight being signed and sealed is not a simple as a couple of tweets, although the pair’s willingness to get it on is a testament to their warrior-like abilities and makes for a great fight if it happens to come off.
It would also be conceivable that winner of Macklin v Lee could fight the winner of the headlining fight for the WBC middleweight championship later on in the year as four of the 160lb division’s best could now potentially feature at the famous venue in New York.
