Cotto confirms Martinez WBC title challenge for MSG on June 7

Cotto’s advisor Gaby Penagaricano confirmed the news that the announcement was imminent to WBN earlier in the week and the Puerto Rican himself has now revealed that the clash is a done deal.

The intriguing Argentina v Puerto Rico encounter will be broadcast on HBO this summer and already has all the makings of not only a Fight of the Year contender, but an all-time boxing classic between two great champions.

Martinez, 38, has ruled the 160lb division since his impressive victories over Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams in 2010 and only now has a challenger to his throne in the formidable Gennady Golovkin.

‘Maravilla’ makes the second defence of his regained WBC title against three-weight world title holder Cotto, but will need a considerably better performance than he showed against Martin Murray last April to see him through at the 159lb catchweight.

Meanwhile, hard-hitting Cotto is moving up yet another weight division in search of further glory in his career as the 33 year-old looks to build on his low-key demolition job against Delvin Rodriguez in October.

Rumours that Jayson Velez is one fighter to feature on the undercard have yet to be confirmed by Miguel Cotto Promotions, with a formal fight release set to follow shortly.
